Chelsea boost as 'amazing' player spotted in training after missing previous match

Chelsea have been given a potential injury boost ahead of this weekend’s match against Brighton because Josh Acheampong has been spotted in training alongside his teammates.

Josh Acheampong, 19, is a supremely talented young defender who’s been a regular in the Chelsea squad so far this season. In fact, fans have been somewhat baffled that the academy graduate has been left on the bench so often.

The Blues secured a tight 2-1 away win at League One club Lincoln City on Tuesday night, which sets up a trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Unfortunately, Acheampong was absent from Chelsea’s matchday squad against Lincoln due to illness, which is a huge shame because it felt like a perfect opportunity for him to get some minutes in the bank.

The good news is that the teenage defender has been spotted in training this week at Cobham before the Premier League showdown against Brighton.

Josh Acheampong involved in Chelsea training

On Chelsea’s official website, the club uploaded a gallery of photos from the Blues training session on Thursday.

Eagle-eyed supporters will be able to spot Acheampong featuring in a group image alongside teammates Robert Sanchez, Marc Cucurella, Reece James, Alejandro Garnacho, Romeo Lavia and Estevao Willian.

Therefore, it looks like Acheampong could be available for Saturday’s league match against Brighton following his midweek absence against Lincoln.

Acheampong, who’s been described as “amazing” by Tosin Adarabioyo, has to be banging on the door for more minutes. The versatile defender, who can play centre-half or right-back, was excellent on the opening day of the league season in the 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace. Enzo Maresca has refused to use him since, though.

Chelsea fans have urged Maresca to pick Acheampong to help solve the current vulnerability in central defence.

Chelsea’s defence has been all at sea in September

The most concerning thing about Chelsea’s form since returning from the September international break has been the defensive vulnerability.

As you can see above, Maresca’s side are conceding two goals per game on average this month, which simply isn’t sustainable if they want a successful season.

The absence of Levi Colwill with an ACL injury appears to be really hurting Chelsea at centre-back. If they want to find a solution, Acheampong may be the answer and worth playing for an extended run of matches.
