Wesley Fofana shares what Levi Colwill does 'every morning' at the Chelsea training ground after ACL injury
Levi Colwill has a long way to go on the road to recovery, but fellow Chelsea centre-back Wesley Fofana has provided a positive update.
It was a real shame to see Levi Colwill go down with an ACL injury before the season even started. The Englishman had a brilliant summer at the Club World Cup and was only getting better.
Colwill was preparing for a challenging campaign for Chelsea, looking to build on their successes from last season.
When news of his injury broke, there was immediate concern over losing the strongest player in arguably Chelsea’s weakest position. There was talk of replacing Colwill in the market, but no move would materialise.
Chelsea have already felt his absence on numerous occasions this season.
Wesley Fofana reveals Levi Colwill coping well with ACL injury
An ACL injury is nasty from a physical perspective, but it can affect a player’s mental state just as much.
Thankfully, Wesley Fofana claims Colwill is dealing with it well. In an interview for Chelsea’s official YouTube channel, the Frenchman shared his thoughts on his teammate’s injury.
He says: “I know what he feels because I had the same injury. And when I see him every morning, I know inside of him is hard. It’s very hard for him because last season he played close to every game.
“He performed incredible and when you have this you’re a little bit like ‘why me?'”
It would be difficult to spend so much time away from what you love, even more so when you still have to watch teammates train and play games, unable to contribute. But Colwill is staying positive.
As Fofana puts it: “But every morning you see him, he smiles, he’s happy, and you talk with him and he say I’m okay, I’m good, I’m fine, and you talk with him. This attitude is the best attitude.”
Colwill looks likely to miss the rest of this season, but it’s important he can maintain this outlook, as his presence in the dressing room is invaluable to Enzo Maresca, injured or not.
Chelsea need to figure out a short-term solution to Colwill’s absence
The Blues have been up and down to start the season. Inconsistency has plagued Chelsea at important moments, and Colwill’s mature presence on the pitch is sorely missed.

The combination of Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo has done more harm than good in the opening weeks, suggesting something needs to be addressed at the back.
Jorrel Hato could be the solution to play alongside Fofana, but he’s still extremely young and new to the Premier League. Talks of a loan for Hato are ill-advised, but they do suggest he’s not seen as a potential starter as of yet.
Outside of that, the only option is to go back into the market in January.
Maresca will recognise that the defensive line isn’t strong enough for the demands of a full season and multiple competitions. It could be argued that Chelsea need a centre-back regardless of Colwill’s situation, so a winter purchase could be the best way forward.
