Fans in disagreement over Cole Palmer’s Ballon d’Or ranking
The Ballon d’Or ceremony took place in Paris on Monday night, and Chelsea star Cole Palmer was recognised for his efforts last season.
Ousmane Dembele was a deserving winner of football’s most prestigious individual award, after a season that saw him win a treble and lead PSG to glory in the Champions League.
There were multiple potential winners this year, but the Frenchman came out on top.
The top 10 ranking featured three Premier League players. Gianluigi Donnarumma (#9) for his part in PSG’s successes, Mohammed Salah (#4) for his record-breaking Premier League campaign, and Club World Cup and Conference League winner Cole Palmer.
Fans react to Cole Palmer finishing 8th in the Ballon d’Or
Palmer’s inclusion in the top 10 was a welcome one for Chelsea fans, who will be happy to see their star man get his flowers.
This fan is excited to have such a highly touted talent at Chelsea, but he has a concern: “I need this club to be serious and start winning the League and Champions League so Palmer could rightfully win the Ballon d’Or, but he can’t win it here if the directors aren’t serious.”
If only it were that simple.
One Chelsea fan is holding onto a grudge over some fanbases’ comments on Chelsea, saying: “Seems a ‘pre-season trophy’ has put Palmer in the Ballon d’Or top 10.”
Not everyone thinks the Englishman deserves to be so high.
As one fan puts it: “There’s honestly nothing Cole Palmer did that can motivate him being top ten and before guys like Pedri,” while another says: “Completely ridiculous! Kane’s 53 G/A and a league title easily outshine Palmer. Rankings make no sense.”
There is an element to consider which is that Twitter or ‘X’ is hardly the most positive place to discuss your football takes.
This Chelsea fan has heard enough of the negativity, saying: “There is something seriously wrong with you if you don’t think Palmer is a top 10 footballer in the world.”
Chelsea fans are backing their guy, anyway: “Cole Palmer won 20 man of the match awards in the PL alone last season. Two cup final man of the matches too. People act like he was a scrub last season lmao. Casuals.”
Cole Palmer can play at Ballon d’Or level
To be clear, playing at Ballon d’Or level does not mean winning the award. That is a hefty task, and while Palmer might have the talent, so many things need to go in a player’s favour, most importantly, team success.
Four attackers were playing at a Ballon d’Or level last season. Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Mo Salah and Ousmane Dembele. All four won their domestic titles.

Palmer has shown he can put up close to the numbers those guys do, and he’s still so young.
If Chelsea made a run at the Premier League and/or Champions League, there’s no reason why he can’t be in contention for a first-place finish in the coming seasons.
