Gabriel Agbonlahor claims two Chelsea players just ‘couldn't handle it' against Bayern Munich

Chelsea were welcomed back to the Champions League with a 3-1 defeat away to Bayern Munich. According to Gabriel Agbonlahor, Blues defenders Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo looked a little out of their depth at the Allianz Arena.

On Wednesday night, the Blues were beaten by Bayern in their opening group phase match of this season’s Champions League. After a two-year absence from Europe’s elite club competition, Chelsea are now back in the big time, where they will face some of the best teams around.

Even though Enzo Maresca’s side showed plenty of promise in Munich, particularly through Cole Palmer, they ended up losing to Bayern because they eventually ran out of steam.

As expected, Trevoh Chalobah, 26, and Tosin Adarabioyo, 27, started in the heart of defence against Bayern. It was a tricky evening’s work for the centre-back partnership, though.

Afterwards, Chelsea supporters criticised Tosin and Chalobah for their below par performances away to Bayern.

Gabriel Agbonlahor questions the levels of Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo

Gabriel Agbonlahor claimed that Chelsea duo Chalobah and Tosin were overawed with the challenge of Bayern in the Champions League.

Agbonlahor told talkSPORT: “I look at Chalobah and Tosin. I think they’re very good defenders, but they’re going to get you top four season after season. They are not going to win you a Premier League. They are not going to win you a Champions League. When they played a proper team – Serge Gnabry, Michael Olise, Luiz Diaz and Harry Kane making runs in behind them – they couldn’t handle it last night.”

For Chalobah, he netted an own goal against Bayern when Michael Olise’s cross deflected in off him in the penalty area. He struggled overall during his first appearance in the Champions League since the 2022/23 campaign.

The centre-back’s performance was a little out of the blue because Chalobah has impressed in the Premier League during the opening weeks of this season.

Meanwhile, Tosin’s form has been under the microscope lately because he’s looked a bit weaker since Wesley Fofana returned to the bench from his latest injury.

It has been reported that Chelsea are looking at signing a new central defender ahead of the January transfer window midway through this campaign. If they want to go deep in the Champions League, we agree they may need an upgrade in the heart of defence.
