Jermaine Pennant claims Chelsea are 'absolutely crackers' for not signing £40m Premier League ace

Former Liverpool player Jermaine Pennant thinks Chelsea made one really bad decision in the summer transfer window.

Chelsea did some good business, bringing in Joao Pedro, for example. The striker has made an immediate impact in west London.

However, the Blues did not sign a new central defender despite Levi Colwill being ruled out for the majority of the season with an ACL injury.

Chelsea were keen on Dean Huijsen, but the 20-year-old ended up joining Real Madrid instead.

Jermaine Pennant slams Chelsea for not making Marc Guehi move

Chelsea were also linked with Marc Guehi but did not make a swoop for him. Pennant has now described the club’s decision not to bid for the Crystal Palace captain as “absolutely crackers”.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “That one is absolutely crackers, that, to not go for Guehi when you lose your main centre-back — out for the season — and you’ve got Guehi…, 40 million, just to make sure the deal’s done.”

Guehi would not have cost Chelsea that much money either. With the 25-year-old into the final 12 months of his contract, according to Sky Sports, Palace only wanted £40m for him.

Considering his age, experience and ability, that would have been a bargain. All in all, with Enzo Maresca‘s backline really struggling right now, Guehi and Mike Maignan would be welcome additions.

Despite showing strong interest in him, Maignan was another player the Blues failed to sign over the summer.

Chelsea could still sign Marc Guehi

Guehi clearly has no intention of signing a new contract at Palace and nothing is agreed with Liverpool for January or next summer, so it is not impossible that Chelsea make a move for Guehi in the near future.

The Chelsea Chronicle has already been told that Chelsea do plan to make an offer for Guehi when his contract expires.

If their former academy player does not join Liverpool in January, he may very well end up at Stamford Bridge. Of course, with the way the Conference League holders are defending at the minute, they need him now.

The transfer market is not open, however, so Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo really need to step up.
