'They hope': Journalist shares why Chelsea don't want to build a Premier League-winning squad just yet
Journalist Matt Law has broken down some of the detail when it comes to the Chelsea hierarchy and their thought process when assembling the current squad.
There has been a quite obvious push under the current Chelsea owners to build a squad of players stacked with talented youngsters. It is why they have signed so many exciting teenagers, including the likes of Estevao Willian and Jorrel Hato.
Chelsea believe they have taken a step forward and that the current squad is stronger than what they had last year. That is being put to the test right now because Blues head coach Enzo Maresca is dealing with several injuries to key figures.
When you consider that Maresca has concerns over the goalkeeper and centre-half positions, it suggests that the squad building still needs some fine-tuning.
Chelsea not looking to build Premier League-winning squad yet
According to journalist Matt Law, Chelsea’s transfer strategy means that they are not aiming to put together a squad to win the Premier League title right now.
Instead, the Blues believe in a long-term vision, where they want a group of players to eventually create a dynasty together.
Speaking on The London Is Blue Podcast, Law explained: “I do think they are building a squad towards winning the Premier League and winning trophies. But it’s something they’re trying to get to that with progress and get to that with time. And their belief is that that will give something longer lasting.”
“Their belief is they could try and build a squad to win the Premier League this minute that would have a better chance probably of winning the Premier League, say, this season. But they don’t believe that would necessarily set them up well for the future. What they’re trying to do is build a winning squad which probably won’t win immediately in terms of the very biggest prizes.
“But they hope that by the time it gets to the stage where it does win that it’s set up to win and win and win and win. And only really time will tell whether that’s right or wrong. It’s kind of impossible to judge it.”
