Todd Boehly made his worst decision as Chelsea owner exactly two years ago

Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital made a lot of changes at Chelsea following their takeover of the club in 2022.

For example, shortly after Boehly and Eghbali arrived at Stamford Bridge, Thomas Tuchel was sacked as manager.

That year, Chelsea also signed Raheem Sterling, and either that or Tuchel’s dismissal could easily go down as the worst decision Boehly has made as Chelsea co-owner.

Most Blues fans, though, would rightly put another decision above that and every other made in the Boehly and Clearlake era.

Graham Potter appointment a disaster

Chelsea choosing to get rid of Tuchel just six games into the 2022/23 Premier League season was bad enough, but to then appoint Graham Potter as his successor really disappointed some supporters.

It was only the previous year when Tuchel was able to guide the Blues to Champions League glory.

Of course, Potter was showing a lot of promise as a coach at Brighton & Hove Albion, but managing Chelsea was always going to be an entirely different kind of job. And in the end, Potter failed spectacularly.

The 50-year-old was sacked less than seven months after his appointment, exiting with Chelsea sitting in 11th place.

The Blues went on to finish that campaign in 12th and did not really recover until the end of the 2023/24 season, when a late run of good form under Mauricio Pochettino saw them finish sixth and qualify for the Conference League.

Ultimately, the decision to hire Potter set Chelsea’s project back massively and has to go down as the worst Boehly and Co have made so far.

Chelsea fans will not hold their former manager in high regard, though he almost did them a favour in the last transfer window.

His current club West Ham United wanted to take Axel Disasi off Chelsea’s hands, but no deal was finalised in the end.

What Todd Boehly said about Graham Potter appointment

Boehly was expecting big things from Potter, which is understandable. Again, the former Brighton boss was making a good impression at the Amex Stadium, with his team playing some wonderful stuff at times.

Upon his arrival at Stamford Bridge, Boehly told Chelsea’s official club website: “We are thrilled to bring Graham to Chelsea. He is a proven coach and an innovator in the Premier League who fits our vision for the Club. Not only is he extremely talented on the pitch, he has skills and capabilities that extend beyond the pitch which will make Chelsea a more successful Club.

“He has had a major impact at his previous Clubs and we look forward to his positive impact at Chelsea. We look forward to supporting him, his coaching team and the squad in realising their full potential in the coming months and years.”

Potter could not prove the above and live up to the hype, though, and will be a stain on Boehly’s tenure as Chelsea owner and chairman.
