Vincent Kompany predicts Chelsea will start £40m star against his Bayern Munich side

Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany is currently preparing his side to face Chelsea this week in the Champions League. He’s admitted that it won’t be a shock to see Cole Palmer named in the opposition’s starting line-up.

It’s the opening week of the league phase in this season’s Champions League, and one of the heavyweight clashes sees Bayern host Chelsea at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.

Blues supporters will be anxious to see whether Cole Palmer will be starting for them. After his recent injury absence, the 23-year-old playmaker marked his return at the weekend with a goal off the bench in the 2-2 draw against Brentford.

Bayern striker Harry Kane thinks Palmer can become “world-class” if he continues at his current rate.

It’s obvious that the Blues are a much stronger side when Palmer is pulling the strings in the attacking third. The £40m star (Sky Sports) now gets the opportunity to shine for Chelsea on the Champions League stage, but will he get a starting role in midweek against Bayern?

Vincent Kompany expects Cole Palmer to start

Vincent Kompany, the Bayern manager, suggests that he expects to see Palmer in Chelsea’s starting XI against his side on Wednesday evening.

“Cole is an outstanding player. It wouldn’t surprise me if he starts, but maybe they won’t take the risk with him. I know him very well,” Kompany said via Bayern Munich’s official website.

The reality is that Palmer has had a frustrating campaign so far because of his groin injury, sitting out the international break as well. If he starts against Bayern, it will be just his second start of the season. In fact, he will be making his 100th Chelsea appearance if he features.

He changed the game against Brentford with his introduction, so it would be a huge call from Blues head coach Enzo Maresca to leave him out for the Bayern trip.

Palmer’s Champions League record is one goal in eight appearances during his time as a Manchester City player. The major difference now is that he’ll be playing in the competition with a lot more pressure and expectation on his shoulders.

Chelsea’s travelling squad for Bayern Munich

It’s been confirmed via Chelsea’s official website that the Blues have travelled to Germany with a 23-man squad for their upcoming European tie against Bayern.

Opta’s Supercomputer tips Bayern to beat Chelsea, which makes sense because the Bundesliga giants have won five out of five across all competitions so far this season. They have done so with an aggregate scoreline of 19-5, too.

However, Maresca has the squad available to him to pick an incredibly strong team that should have their eyes on three points as well.
