David James claims Chelsea will be title contenders this season if team do one thing

Former England goalkeeper David James has been discussing Chelsea’s chances of winning the Premier League title this term.

Chelsea managed to beat James’ old side Liverpool last weekend and are just five points behind Arsenal, who currently sit in first place.

Under Enzo Maresca, the Blues have been much better in the cup competitions, winning both the Club World Cup and Conference League last season.

However, James is not ruling them out of the Premier League title race.

David James urges Chelsea to keep their players on the pitch

Right now, Chelsea do not look like title contenders. While Maresca’s men were able to beat the current champions, they lost back-to-back games against Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester United prior to that.

That was down to getting players sent off in both matches, though. If Chelsea cut that out, James thinks they can compete for the title.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily, the ex-Liverpool and England star said: “I think they are genuine title contenders if they keep themselves on the pitch.”

Maresca is the latest Chelsea representative to be sent off this season, receiving a red card in Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool.

Former referee Mark Clattenburg recently discussed Maresca’s dismissal, explaining why the Italian had to be shown a second yellow during the game.

Before that, Joao Pedro was sent off in Chelsea’s 1-0 win against Benfica in the Champions League, while Trevoh Chalobah and Robert Sanchez picked up red cards against Brighton and United respectively.

Three reasons why Chelsea won’t win Premier League title

When they are at their best, Chelsea have shown they can beat anyone in the world. The Blues have just defeated the Premier League champions, while they tore the European champions apart in the summer after beating Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 at the Club World Cup.

However, this current Chelsea squad does not have a reliable goalkeeper, is plagued by injuries at the moment and lacks experience. Those are three reasons why Chelsea are unlikely to get their hands on the Premier League crown in the current campaign.
