Mark Clattenburg gives take on Enzo Maresca’s red card during Chelsea vs Liverpool

Enzo Maresca’s red card caused some debate that lasted long after the final whistle of Chelsea’s thrilling 2-1 win over Liverpool.

Estevao Willian scored deep into stoppage time to help the Blues return to winning ways in the Premier League, sending Stamford Bridge into a state of frenzy.

Maresca sprinted down the touchline to celebrate with his players, seeing him sent off for a second bookable offence after being booked in the first half.

Jamie Carragher disagreed with the punishment for Maresca, with him unable to come out and complete post-match media duties after the game.

Mark Clattenburg agrees with Enzo Maresca red card

Despite the criticism of the decision, Mark Clattenburg has claimed that the referee was given no choice but to issue the second yellow card, after rules that were agreed on by all the clubs in the Premier League.

He said: “He was given a yellow card for the celebration. I’ve listened to several pundits around football complaining that the yellow card is harsh. What you need to remember is the LMA, the PFA, the Premier League, the FA and the PGMOL got together because they had an issue with the technical area participants, and they felt there was a problem where coaches were overstepping the mark.

“What we need to understand is Enzo Maresca wasn’t given a straight red card. He was given two yellow cards in the game. The first yellow card was for dissent, therefore he’s got no defence to say that it’s harsh. He’s said something to the match officials or shown some behaviour that was not accepted. They agreed that if this happened, this manager will be cautioned. They accepted that at the start of the season, so the referees have to abide by that.

“Everyone called Ekitike silly for removing his shirt, but no one’s saying Maresca’s silly in his actions for getting sent off. I think referees would love that this rule isn’t in place, and let the FA deal with it afterwards, but while the rule is in place, the referee has to act on it, like it has for the shirt removal. The referee was well within his rights to give that yellow card.”

Pressure easing off Maresca

There had been discontent amongst the Chelsea fans in the build-up to the Liverpool game, with them on a run of three defeats in four across all competitions.

Some Blues supporters had called for a new manager, but they will be silent again after Maresca led his side to a thrilling win against the champions.

The boss clearly has enough credit in the bank with what he has already achieved to survive a very minor blip, but growing a connection with the whole fanbase is something that still needs to be done.

Even just his passionate celebrations will be a big step to achieving that, and he will be looking forward to returning to the dugout after their next game against Nottingham Forest.
