Enzo Maresca confirms another Chelsea player won't feature until after international break

It is a busy time for Chelsea’s medical staff because Enzo Maresca has just confirmed that another Blues player is out injured and won’t return until after the international break.

Thankfully, Chelsea have just one remaining fixture before a pause for the October internationals. The Blues host Premier League leaders Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

Head coach Enzo Maresca is already missing several first-team stars due to various injuries, including the likes of Cole Palmer, Tosin Adarabioyo, Liam Delap and Dario Essugo.

Apparently, Palmer and Tosin are expected back after the international period, meaning both won’t feature this weekend against Liverpool.

Andrey Santos joins Chelsea’s injury list

After Chelsea beat Benfica 1-0 in the Champions League group phase on Tuesday night, Maresca delivered another injury blow.

It turns out that Blues midfielder Andrey Santos, 21, has picked up an injury problem. He started last weekend’s league defeat to Brighton, but was absent from the matchday squad against Benfica due to injury.

Maresca said via Football.London: “We lost from Brighton Andrey Santos, who will be out until after the international break. We have seven, eight players out unfortunately for us in this moment.”

Chelsea’s directors were warned about injuries this season following a busy summer with the Club World Cup. Unfortunately, it appears to be catching up with the squad in the early months of the 2025/26 season.

It is frustrating Santos misses a couple of Blues matches because he was beginning to find his feet as important option in the centre of the park.

Ramires is convinced Santos will shine at Chelsea with his characteristics. From what we’ve seen of the all-action central midfielder, we definitely agree with him!

Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez need support

It is concerning that Chelsea still rely on Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez so much in the centre of the park this season. If Maresca’s side are going to achieve a successful season, there needs to be a bit of rotation to navigate so many fixtures.

On Tuesday, Fernandez and Caicedo starred in the Champions League win against Benfica, particularly the latter.

The Blues have no choice but to ask the senior midfielders to go again on Saturday against Liverpool because Santos and Essugo are unavailable.
