‘I’m close’: Reece James makes big statement after Chelsea’s win vs Liverpool
Reece James starred for Chelsea in their 2-1 win against Premier League champions Liverpool on Saturday.
It was a very interesting game for James, who eventually found himself playing at centre-back.
The 25-year-old is a right-back and can also play in midfield, but after Benoit Badiashile and Josh Acheampong were taken off, he was moved to central defence.
He has since spoken about playing there and his current form for the Club World Cup winners.

Reece James says he’s almost back to his best again
Not only is James managing to stay fit now, but the Chelsea captain has also been able to perform at a very high level.
In fact, according to the player himself, he is now close to his best again. Speaking about playing at centre-back and his current form after Chelsea’s victory over Liverpool, James said (via Chelsea’s official club website): “I didn’t expect to play centre-back, it’s one of the positions I’ve never played before!
“It’s high-level football, I had to adapt and play the best football I could. At the moment I’m close to my best.”
With Badiashile and Acheampong not thought to be carrying injuries despite being taken off at the weekend, James should return to right-back or midfield.
Jorrel Hato can also start in central defence, and the Dutchman played well when he came on against Arne Slot’s side.
Marc Cucurella name-checked Hato after the game, impressed with how he quickly adapted to a very high-intensity and competitive match.

Reece James’ message to Chelsea teammates after Liverpool win
Chelsea will be really happy with their triumph over Liverpool. The Blues managed to beat the Premier League champions at a time when they have been under a bit of pressure.
Prior to that fixture, Enzo Maresca‘s men had lost their previous two top-flight games.

James is not getting carried away, though, and has told his teammates that they all need to push on from here.
“We need to keep on building throughout the season,” the England international said. “Red cards have played a part in recent results, and we’re in a difficult moment with the amount of players we have out. That’s football and we have to adapt and play the best we can with what we have. We did that.
“It’s a big step in the right direction. We’ve beaten the champions. It was a big statement and hopefully we can build on this now.”
When the Premier League returns, Maresca takes his side to the City Ground to take on a struggling Nottingham Forest side. Anything other than a win would be extremely disappointing, given the form their upcoming opponents are in.
