'The talent is there': Florent Malouda urges Chelsea player to be more 'fearless' in matches

Unlike some of his Chelsea teammates, Jamie Gittens has made a bit of a slow start to life at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea stars such as Joao Pedro and Estevao Willian have immediately made really strong impressions at the club. In contrast, someone like English talent Jamie Gittens is taking a little bit longer to settle.

The Blues signed Gittens, 21, from Borussia Dortmund in the summer transfer window. Despite his youth, the rapid winger proved in Germany that he’s got incredible talent and potential. It is why it would be foolish to write him off.

In seven Chelsea appearances across all competitions, including three starts, Gittens is yet to register his first goal or assist. So far this season, he’s only shown glimpses of his acceleration, directness and quality in the final third.

An encouraging report states that Chelsea have full faith in Gittens to eventually come good with them and turn things around after the pedestrian start.

Florent Malouda advises Jamie Gittens to be fearless

Even though it is easier said than done, former Chelsea star Florent Malouda has urged Gittens to release the handbrake and play with a fearlessness because he’s got the ability.

Malouda told The Athletic: “When you are so young and join a club like Chelsea, you have to build your confidence. It is part of the journey. The talent is there (with Gittens), it is how you are able to perform at this level. When you are young, you have to be fearless, that is the only way.

“The club believes in him, it is just how he is able to prove to the people at the club who put their trust in him that he belongs to this club. The beauty of football is that with one goal, one assist, a sparkle from Jamie, you can turn things around. You should also believe that you can do it and deliver on a regular basis. He can light the stadium on fire with one goal, and then it starts.”

Of course, Gittens needs to get to grips with the intensity of the Premier League. He knows he needs to impress when he’s on the pitch because he’s competing with the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Pedro Neto for a starting position.

Troy Deeney loves Gittens as a football player but admits that he does still need to sharpen up his end product.

Jamie Gittens must use international break to find some form

While some Chelsea stars can use October’s international break to get some much-needed rest, Gittens should be doing the opposite.

The left-winger is currently with Lee Carsley’s England Under-21s squad, along with club teammates Josh Acheampong and Jamie Gittens. They are currently preparing for two important matches as well.

Several Chelsea youngsters are representing their countries during the international gap, and you can be sure that Enzo Maresca will be keeping a close eye on how they do.

We expect to see Gittens have plenty of opportunities to impress for Chelsea in the coming months because of a packed schedule. However, he can really help himself if he makes a statement with the England U21s because he faces a lot of competition in the wide areas at his club.
