Enzo Maresca didn’t even speak to one Chelsea signing before he joined the club this summer

Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea career came to an abrupt end on Thursday.

He entered the new year as manager, but by lunchtime it was announced that Maresca was leaving Chelsea after a season and a half at the helm.

Since then, the news cycle has been a balanced mix of new manager speculation and looking back on the Italian’s time at Stamford Bridge.

In keeping with the latter, new information has surfaced regarding one of the last signings to come into the club under the Italian.

Enzo Maresca didn’t speak to Alejandro Garnacho prior to Chelsea arrival

One of the reasons that has been given for the breakdown in the relationship between club and coach was how little say Maresca had in certain areas that usually fall under a manager’s remit.

The owners have made it clear that the manager at Chelsea is down the pecking order when it comes to recruitment.

With how much recruitment they do, it isn’t a total surprise that Maresca didn’t meet Alejandro Garnacho before his Man United exit, but it is unusual.

As Kieran Gill reports for the Daily Mail: “He did not speak to Alejandro Garnacho before he was brought in from Manchester United, for example.

“That purchase was put to him for his opinion, and Maresca agreed he was worth signing, but the time for talking would come once he had him on the training pitch.”

Is the Garnacho transfer working out? 👀

This more hands off approach is in line with the running theory that he was not as involved with that aspect as we might have thought. It’s that lack of input and responsibility that seems to have unsettled Maresca.

Garnacho has to do more to justify Chelsea decision

From what we’ve seen from the young Argentinian, it’s fair to say Garnacho needs to improve his performances.

There have been times when he has looked really dangerous, but like how it was at Man United, the end product leaves a bit to be desired.

Neither Garnacho nor Jamie Gittens have locked down a spot at Chelsea, and links to Antoine Semenyo tell us the club are not convinced by either as a starter.

Chelsea could still sign a new attacker after cooling their interest in Antoine Semenyo. Who would you target, or are you content with Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens?

It doesn’t look like Chelsea are going to sign a starting-quality winger in January, but they will need to raise their level under a new manager or neither of them will be seen as untouchable in the summer — not by a long shot.
