Matt Law names three managers who almost definitely won't be hired by Chelsea now

Chelsea’s search for an Enzo Maresca replacement continues, but three high-profile managers have been ruled out of contention.

With Chelsea heading to the Etihad on Sunday, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that a new coach will be hired in time to face Man City.

Liam Rosenior is favourite to take the Chelsea job, but he was tight-lipped about it in his press conference on Friday.

Closer to home, Oliver Glasner has been ruled out, and now, so have three more managers whose names were being floated for the vacancy.

Chelsea’s Enzo Maresca replacement won’t be a ‘star name’

It’s not like the decision-makers at the club have only started thinking about potential hires in recent days.

Discontent has been brewing between Maresca and Chelsea for weeks, and they have some idea of who they want to target. Rosenior and Fulham’s Marco Silva look the most likely candidates, with Chelsea not looking for a huge name.

Appearing on the London Is Blue podcast, Matt Law shares what he has heard about other potential candidates.

He says: “Farioli has been mentioned to me, although he has a rather large buyout clause at Porto, which I think is about 13 million. And then, but what I am told is it won’t be a star name.

“So anyone who’s dreaming of Zidane, who’s out of work, Klopp, who’s out of work, even maybe Xavi Hernandez, who’s out of work, I think you can probably strike them off your list.”

Jurgen Klopp was never going to come to Chelsea after spending most of his career at Liverpool. Xavi and Zinedine Zidane are interesting options who aren’t in a job as of now, but Law is fairly confident it won’t be either of the La Liga legends.

It makes sense to go for a less established coach when you remember the level of control the owners and directors want over every aspect of the team.

Chelsea could be making a mistake with this policy

Yes, it makes sense for the higher-ups to go for a manager who won’t rock the boat and will be happy with a less central role at Stamford Bridge.

It makes sense for their wants, but their wants aren’t necessarily what’s best for Chelsea.

Maresca leaves at the halfway point 👋

What should expectations now be for the end of the season?

Fans are sick of the way the club is being run more as a business than as a sports team. Someone like Zidane who is a proven winner at the highest level, won’t be attracted to a project that has them so far down the pecking order.

Chelsea’s goal should be winning the Premier League, but the fact that they don’t seem to want someone with experience winning at the highest level is surely cause for concern.
