Jamie Carragher rules out five names linked with the Chelsea job, including Xabi Alonso
Chelsea are in crisis and it feels they will remain that way until the end of the season, and at least until the club hires a new manager. Well, Jamie Carragher has just ruled out five potential options.
A sixth straight Premier League defeat on Monday saw Chelsea slip into ninth place. A whole 10 points behind Aston Villa in fifth, and four behind Bournemouth in sixth, ending any Champions League hopes.
It was almost a sixth league game without scoring, until Joao Pedro produced a gorgeous overhead kick in injury time. There is clear disarray at Chelsea, and nothing is going to change until the summer.
Calum McFarlane will remain in interim charge until the end of the season, for the remaining five games, including the FA Cup final. But who replaces him? Well, Jamie Carragher has just ruled out five managers.
Jamie Carragher rules out Antonio Conte return and Xabi Alonso
As things stand, the front-runners include Fulham manager Marco Silva, Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, and out-of-work Xabi Alonso. The latter is without a home after being sacked by Real Madrid.
But according to Carragher on Sky Sports this week, Chelsea will struggle to hire Alonso. He believes the former Leverkusen boss will only join Liverpool if he moves to the Premier League as a manager.

Presented with a list of 10 managers, Carragher also ruled out returns for Antonio Conte, Jose Mourinho, and Frank Lampard, alongside Alonso, as well as a move for Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner.
“I think you probably rule out the bottom three [Mourinho, Lampard and Conte]. They’ve managed Chelsea before, so I don’t see that. I also don’t see Glasner, because he plays with a back three.
“We’ve had this conversation before. I don’t see Xabi Alonso there, because of his link as a Liverpool player and Chelsea being a big rival at the time. I might be wrong on that,” Carragher said yesterday.
Joe Cole thinks Oliver Glasner makes sense, and Chelsea’s stance
Chelsea’s hierarchy have a problem in their search for a new manager, and it is this. Why would any manager, worth their salt, want to join a Chelsea side while BlueCo are running things from upstairs?
Chelsea brought in Liam Rosenior with the board hopeful that Rosenior would do as they said, and not stand in their way. The same with Enzo Maresca, until Maresca won things and overstepped the mark.
At any other club, that is normal. A manager runs things. But at Chelsea, that is not how it works. So, why would the likes of Iraola, Alonso or Silva join Chelsea, unless something drastic changes with BlueCo?
Joe Cole thinks Glasner “makes sense” as Chelsea’s next manager. While Glasner is on the list, the German is not high up and that is because Chelsea do not think Glasner will accept things being run by BlueCo.
Unless BlueCo, Todd Boehly, Behdad Eghbali, or the five sporting directors reduce their involvement at the club, Chelsea will struggle to find a manager that appeases an expectant and disillusioned fanbase.
