‘Very strange’: Gary Cahill noticed what Chelsea did just before Harry Kane scored for Spurs yesterday

Gary Cahill has claimed on Match of the Day 2 that the decision to have Raheem Sterling marking Harry Kane from a corner was very strange.

The striker scored the second late on as Tottenham recorded their first win over Chelsea at their new stadium.

The result piled more misery on Graham Potter, who has now overseen a run of two wins in the last 15 games in all competitions.

Not many will hurt supporters as much as this one though. The rivalry with Tottenham does not need explaining to many.

Potter was able to call on Sterling from the start for the first time in a while, as he steps up his return from injury.

However, it was one of his defensive contributions that brought the most attention to Cahill, who was working as a pundit covering the game.

He said: “I have to agree with Glenn, I think it’s a very strange match-up, putting Sterling marking such a threat. You’d rather have defensive minded players, centre-backs, marking Harry Kane. But they obviously have reasons but it was a very strange decision.”

Sterling was arguably the club’s biggest threat going forward, after Spurs midfielder Oliver Skipp claimed the hosts made a conscious effort to shutdown Joao Felix.

The lapse in concentration from a corner likely comes as a result of Thiago Silva not being present.

The Brazilian was forced off injured in the first half, and despite the return to the pitch for Wesley Fofana, his absence was felt hard.

Positive signs came after the game when a journalist who saw him after full-time claimed he didn’t look to be in too much pain, with no brace or visible aid being present.

There will be hopes for supporters that he returns in time for the Champions League tie with Borussia Dortmund.
