Report: 23-year-old Chelsea player was completely stunned Graham Potter didn’t start him against Aston Villa
Reports have claimed that Trevoh Chalobah was left stunned that Graham Potter decided not to start him against Aston Villa on Saturday.
According to The Athletic, the game plan all week had involved the defender starting the Premier League match, before the system unexplainably changed.
Potter’s team selection at the weekend certainly caused plenty of questions to be asked at how the hosts were lining up for the mid-table affair.
Despite still playing a back three, the manager only elected to start one recognised centre-back in Kalidou Koulibaly. This is despite Chalobah and Benoit Badiashile both being available on the bench.
The decision seemingly had quite a big impact on the result. The Spaniard’s poor header directly led to Ollie Watkins’s opener, whilst Reece James being stuck at centre-back limited his attacking impotence.
Chalobah stunned not to face Villa
The fixture turned out to be Potter’s last in charge. Dropping into the bottom half of the table was seemingly the tipping point for the previously patient Todd Boehly.
Whilst Potter and his staff were seemingly bemused that the team were not carrying out the instructions from the week’s training sessions, it seems some of the players can be directing some of the same complaints towards the man in charge.
Chalobah has now gone nearly two months without a start for the Blues, seemingly a result of bad luck as opposed to poor performances which didn’t really exist.
It doesn’t look to get any easier for the Englishman in the coming weeks and months either. Thiago Silva is a certainty to slot back into the backline when he returns from injury.
At the end of the season, countryman Levi Colwill will aslo be back among the ranks, and all the signs suggest the club want to integrate him as early as next season.
