Rafael Benitez suggests that Mauricio Pochettino needs to get Chelsea back in the Premier League’s top four next season.
Mauricio Pochettino is widely expected to be confirmed soon as Chelsea’s permanent manager, stepping into the role this summer after Frank Lampard finishes this campaign as caretaker boss.
Well-respected journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported on Twitter that Pochettino will be in London this week to sign a three-year deal with Chelsea.
Hopefully, Blues fans are soon put out if their misery by the club, who continue to delay the official announcement.
Benitez, who previously had a spell himself in the manager’s dugout at Stamford Bridge, does think Pochettino could be a good fit for Chelsea
When speaking about Pochettino’s imminent arrival at Chelsea, Benitez told Football Daily: “He’s a good manager, obviously. We will see in a few months if it’s right, but in theory? Yes.
“We are talking about someone that knows the Premier League and how to compete at the top of the table.
“…He will make a lot of right decisions, and if you do that, this team has to be in the top four.”
Chelsea currently sit 11th in the Premier League table on 43 points after 35 games. That leaves them a mammoth 23 points behind fourth-placed Manchester United.
If the Blues want to get back in the Champions League positions next season, Pochettino will have to oversee quite some turnaround in the summer.
The Argentine coach does have the benefit of inheriting a group stacked with talented individuals, but so much hard work needs to be done in improving the form and cutting the squad number.
We’ve enjoyed hearing a report from The Athletic this week that claims Pochettino will demand the installation of cameras at Chelsea’s training ground. It’s a method that he’s used throughout his managerial career to good effect and it should really put the squad on alert at Cobham.
