Report: Manchester City think they can unlock something in Mateo Kovacic that he failed with at Chelsea
Manchester City believe that they can get Mateo Kovacic scoring more goals following his arrival from Chelsea.
That is according to The Athletic.
Mateo Kovacic, who spent five years in total at Stamford Bridge, will now be playing his football at the Etihad Stadium.
Treble winners Man City completed the signing this week of Kovacic, who joins for an initial transfer fee of £25million.
The 29-year-old central midfielder is proven at the top level with spells at Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid. Can he now force his way into Pep Guardiola’s City line-up, though?

The Athletic explains that City think Kovacic can contribute goals in a similar way to Ilkay Gundogan.
Gundogan has been so effective for several years at City as a genuine goalscoring midfielder, so often popping up with huge goals in big games.
He weighed in with 11 goals across all competitions last season, which is why his confirmed exit to join Barcelona this summer does leave quite a sizeable hole in the XI.
The former club captain had a very handy return of 60 goals in 304 City appearances.
In contrast, Kovacic’s attackers numbers at Chelsea are miles off. The Croatian midfielder scored just six times in 221 Blues appearances.

Kovacic can definitely reflect on his Chelsea career with immense pride after a lot of success.
We’ve got to admit he did fail in the goalscoring department, though.
His highlight reel of goals for the Blues is pretty spectacular, including a stunning volley from outside the box against Liverpool.
However, he’s going to need to show a lot more composure around the penalty area to get anywhere near Gundogan’s level as a regular scorer.
If Kovacic can add goals to his game, you would be looking at one of the world’s most complete midfielders.
