Report: Mason Mount actually wanted to join another Premier League club before Manchester United
Reports have claimed that Mason Mount was originally keen on joining Liverpool if he left Chelsea this summer.
According to LondonsFirst, Jurgen Klopp’s side were the one the 24-year-old originally preferred to move to, instead of Manchester United.
It was reported yesterday that the Blues and United had agreed a fee to see Mount move to Old Trafford this summer.
This follows news that his relationship with the hierarchy had deteriorated beyond repair, and he was not willing to sign a new contract to stay at his boyhood club.
Even if his move would not come this summer, he was seemingly prepared to run down his contract in order to leave for free.
When it became evident that there would be no outcome where Mount remained at the club, a number of big teams were interested in bringing him in.
Mount wanted Liverpool
The original leaders for a deal were seemingly Liverpool, with Klopp himself a reported fan of the player.
However, they blinked first in the race to sign a new midfielder this summer by beating the likes of Chelsea to a deal for World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister.
With their tightened budget in comparison to other teams at that level, they would not have been able to meet the Blues’ demands as far as a transfer fee goes.
This saw United emerge as frontrunners, and a deal has now been completed after weeks of fierce negotiations.
Supporters will no doubt be divided over their feelings towards the move, with the poster boy of the illustrious academy moving to a rival when entering the peak years of his career.
However, many will point to his inability to help the side in their hour of need last season as a reason to question his ability.
