'His aura': Mario Melchiot really loves the way 22-year-old Chelsea star plays the game
Mario Melchiot is a huge admirer of Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez and the way he plays the game.
Enzo Fernandez, 22, is certainly one of the biggest positives from a hectic 15 months under this ownership at Stamford Bridge.
There were several eyebrows raised when Chelsea splashed out £106.8million (Sky Sports) to sign Fernandez from Benfica at the turn of the year.
However, the Argentine midfielder has almost immediately become an integral player in the Blues line-up. That has continued at the start of the new season under Mauricio Pochettino’s management, too.
ESPN pundit Melchiot has delivered a glowing verdict on Chelsea’s No 8, which included giving a special mention to his presence on the pitch.
When asked who could win Chelsea’s player of the year this season, Melchiot told ESPN: “It’s a difficult one. I like Fernandez now.
“His aura, the way he plays the game…
“In the winter a lot of things change. Let’s see how he performs in the winter. If he does, I think it won’t be a bad shout to focus on him.”
In our view, Fernandez may be first name on the Chelsea team sheet right now.
It’s been great to see more of the central midfielder as an attacking threat in recent weeks, with Moises Caicedo’s presence alongside him providing extra defensive support.
Fernandez is a complete midfielder capable of contributing in all areas of the pitch, so we’re very excited to see what he can achieve moving forwards this season.
It’s no surprise to us we’ve seen wearing the armband at times this campaign when Reece James and Ben Chilwell are both off the pitch.
