‘Now is the moment’: Head of academy says Chelsea made the right move signing his 'incredible' player

Independiente del Valle’s head of academy Andoni Bombin has praised Chelsea’s decision to take a gamble on Kendry Paez.

Chelsea agreed a £17m deal with IDV in June to sign Kendry Paez despite the midfielder still being just 16 years of age, but Bombin says he would have done the same thing if he were in the Blues’ position.

Speaking to the Daily Mail about Chelsea’s decision to buy Paez, Bombin said: “I think that Chelsea understand that this [signing him] is an investment, a good project. If I was a club I’m going to do the same. Right now in the market there is a big fight between all the clubs. You need to select the talent as soon as possible. If you don’t do that another one is going to do it.

“Now is the moment to try to identify the talent and try to get the talent with you and even if you need to wait for two years. It needs investment and you need to bet on this [talent] so I think the decision is the proper decision.”

Paez may still only be 16, but that did not stop Ecuador manager Felix Sanchez from giving him his senior debut against Uruguay yesterday.

Chelsea building team for the future

Paez, whose talent has been described as “incredible” by Moises Caicedo, is not the only young player Chelsea have signed recently.

Since the Blues were taken over by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, they have brought in the likes of Carney Chukwuemeka, Cesare Casadei and Andrey Santos.

If their developments go to plan, in the near future, Chelsea could have a group of really young but talented players in their first team.

There is always the chance, though, that they just sell on Chukwuemeka, Paez or whoever for profit.

Their transfer strategy is certainly an interesting one and it may not be a while until we see whether it has paid off or not.

With the amount of talent that Chelsea have recruited, though, at least one or two of those players have to come good and make an impact in the first team. And if Paez is already featuring for his country, maybe the Ecuador international will be one of them.
