'That's what I'd be thinking': Alan Shearer suggests Chelsea player may be quite annoyed right now

Alan Shearer suggests Chelsea’s Levi Colwill will be slightly annoyed right now because of what happened during the international break.

Levi Colwill, who’s just 20, received a first senior call-up to the England squad.

The young defender was an unused substitute in the weekend’s 1-1 draw away to Ukraine in a European Championship qualifier. Again, he didn’t get on the pitch during England’s 3-1 win against Scotland yesterday in a friendly match.

It means the Chelsea youngster will have to wait a while longer before he makes his senior international debut.

Shearer was left bemused by the fact that England manager Gareth Southgate didn’t turn to Colwill or Fikayo Tomori against Scotland on Tuesday night.

The Three Lions boss opted to call upon Harry Maguire off the bench to replace Marc Guehi rather than give minutes to Colwill or Tomori.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast (13 September), Shearer said: “My only thing would be is that you’re putting Harry Maguire into the team. “I know he started on the weekend, he’s put him on again tonight. The two guys on the bench, Tomori and Colwill, What are they sat there thinking?

“We’ve said it before, I know Harry’s done well for Gareth in the past, great professional but then Gareth chucks him tonight. You have to feel for him because clearly, he’s not match-fit because he hasn’t played matches.

“He doesn’t sort his feet out [for the own goal]. So, then the other two lads are thinking ‘Hang on, what have we got to do here?’.

“It’s a friendly game against Scotland, you’ve started him in the qualifier game. Why don’t you put one of us on at half time instead of him? That’s what I’d be thinking. What have we got to do to get a game here?”

We were left equally frustrated by Southgate overlooking Colwill this week.

It seemed like the perfect opportunity to give a debut to the highly-rated youngster, but perhaps that’ll come next month during the October international break. Regardless, we’re convinced his time will eventually come in a Three Lions shirt.

Chelsea will welcome back a fully fit and fresh Colwill ahead of Sunday’s Premier League fixture away to Bournemouth.
