'I'm sure': Manager suggests Chelsea have recall clause in ‘exciting’ player's loan which they could use in January
Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray has suggested there is a chance Chelsea could recall loanee Mason Burstow in January.
He told The Northern Echo that while the option is there, he doesn’t expect the Blues to bring back the youngster as they seek to develop him in the North-East.
Despite being yet to score for the Championship side as of yet, Burstow has been impressing the manager in his performances.
Mowbray described him as ‘exciting’ earlier this season as he continues to get regular minutes in the second tier of English football.
He did appear in the Premier League for the Blues earlier this season, after getting some decent minutes under Mauricio Pochettino in pre-season.
The youngster ended the tour of the United States with a goal against Borussia Dortmund that kept them unbeaten during their time across the pond.
Burstow could return to Chelsea
While Mowbray has claimed that there is a chance he could be taken back to Stamford Bridge in January, he doesn’t believe it will be taken.
He said: “I’m expecting him (Burstow) to be here for the season. I’m sure there will be a recall in there – every loan these days seems to have a recall (clause).
“Chelsea seem to have turned the corner a little bit in terms of results though, so maybe there won’t be such urgency to recall a young boy to do a man’s job for them.”
The Blues will also have Christopher Nkunku to return soon, with the aim being that he can bring some goals when he returns.
The France international was the star addition to the attack over the summer, however he is yet to feature after he picked up an injury during the pre-season tour.
