‘Needs to’: Mauricio Pochettino has now warned Chelsea pair they have to improve ahead of Everton game today

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has admitted that Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo need to improve.

Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo are the two most expensive players in Chelsea‘s history but have really struggled at times this season, recently coming in for criticism for their performances against Manchester United.

And Mauricio Pochettino, speaking to the Evening Standard and other outlets before the Blues’ match against Everton today, admitted that the South American duo need to get better.

Chelsea’s midfield should be boosted by the return of Conor Gallagher, who missed the 2-1 defeat to United on Wednesday because of a one-game suspension.

Mauricio Pochettino says Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo need to improve

Pochettino thinks Fernandez and Caicedo’s relationship needs to get better and is confident that it will.

Speaking to the Evening Standard and the rest of the English media in his pre-match press conference, the Argentine said: “The relationship between them needs to improve, between them and individually.

“They are young. The expectation is massive when you arrive. It’s not only the individual expectation but the collective expectation at a club like Chelsea. It is not easy, arriving not in the best place to perform quickly because they need to be part of the solution. They are not the cherry on the cake.

“When you arrive in a team in a building process and you’re young with not too much experience, even if you have good quality and people can see the club paid big money and only for that you need to perform.

“It’s because some people think in this way because they don’t know about football. It’s a process, it’s going to be a process. The moment is going to arrive that they are going to know better and to create this relationship that will help the team win games.”

Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo need to get better

After all of the money that the club have spent on Fernandez and Caicedo, of course they need to up their game.

What happened at United was not good enough, though Pochettino also needs to shoulder some of the blame.

It was clear to see that Chelsea’s midfield was just not working on the night. The former Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur boss needed to change something and quickly but did not.

Another man in the middle could have perhaps helped Fernandez and Caicedo and stopped United slicing through the team so easily.

Of course, Chelsea had a lot of absentees, with Gallagher suspended and Romeo Lavia and Lesley Ugochukwu both injured.

That is Pochettino’s only excuse really for not doing anything about that midfield. But if he had the chance to go back and play that game again, he would probably drop Cole Palmer a bit deeper to help his two team-mates, who just could not cope in the absence of Gallagher.
