Chelsea fans are all saying the same thing about Ben Chilwell after his return in Fulham win

Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell finally made his return from injury yesterday in his side’s 1-0 win against Fulham.

Ben Chilwell had been out since September because of a hamstring problem but came on as a late substitute in the west London derby.

The 27-year-old is a left-back but was playing as a left winger before his injury and that was the role he took up when he was introduced to the game yesterday. Chelsea fans were both confused and frustrated to see Mauricio Pochettino go with that tactic once again.

“This is frustrating,” one Chelsea supporter said on X.

“Poch has to end this,” another said.

With Chilwell playing further forward this season, Levi Colwill has been starting at left-back. However, Chelsea legend Pat Nevin has questioned if that is the right decision.

Mauricio Pochettino cannot keep playing Ben Chilwell on the wing

You can understand why Chilwell replaced Raheem Sterling yesterday. It was late in the game and Chelsea were winning 1-0.

The England international brought extra defensive solidity to the side. However, going forward Pochettino cannot keep using him on the left wing.

Chilwell is, simply put, not a left winger, while Pochettino has Mykhailo Mudryk who can play there.

With his pace and dribbling, the 23-year-old is obviously more of a threat than Chilwell on the flank. If you ask any full-back who would they rather face, there is only going to be one answer: Mudryk.

Honestly, it just seems like a bit of a waste to have Mudryk on the bench and then Chilwell starting in attack.

For whatever reason, though, it is the direction that Pochettino has chosen to go in this term, with central defender Colwill taking over from his team-mate. With Chilwell now back, it will be interesting to see if that will change at some point.
