'He's the one': Alan Shearer blown away by £40m Chelsea player who's so important for Mauricio Pochettino's side

Alan Shearer has singled out the brilliance of Chelsea’s Cole Palmer and his importance at Stamford Bridge.

It’s been quite a rise for Cole Palmer in the last few months, moving from Manchester City fringe player to Chelsea talisman this season.

His incredible form is making a mockery of the £40million (Sky Sports) Chelsea paid Man City for him last summer.

The 21-year-old attacking playmaker has eight goals and six assists in his opening 19 Blues appearances. Let’s remember he’s doing it in a Mauricio Pochettino side that is overall underperforming this campaign as well.

In a study published by CIES Football Observatory this week, Palmer is actually worth more than Arsenal’s Declan Rice right now in player valuations.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast this week, Shearer picked Chelsea’s Palmer when selecting his bursting onto the scene award for 2023:

He thinks the left-footed Blues star is so important right now to Pochettino’s group.

Shearer said: “I’m going to go with Cole Palmer. I think people knew he was good, one or two were surprised he was let go, but I think the way he has fitted into that Chelsea team and they have been struggling and he’s the one to shine most weeks. Without him they would be in a bigger mess than what they are now. So I’m going to say Cole Palmer.”

We agree that Palmer is the very heartbeat of the Chelsea line-up right now, along with Conor Gallagher.

Palmer’s walked into a very young dressing room at Chelsea and from day one looked like one of the key players.

We saw glimpses at the Etihad Stadium of how talented Man City’s academy graduate actually is, but it’s his move to West London that has given him the platform to really kick on.

The senior England international is performing on a weekly basis in the Premier League, scoring two goals and creating an assist in last weekend’s 3-2 win over Luton Town.

The most exciting thing is that we feel the skilful attacker is only just getting started, too!
