‘More interested’: Chelsea are more keen on signing ‘excellent’ player than Arsenal this month – journalist

Journalist Dean Jones has now claimed that Chelsea are a lot more interested than Arsenal in making one big signing this month.

He told the Ranks FC podcast that the Blues are further down the line in terms of being intrigued by a potential Karim Benzema signing during the January transfer window.

Benzema has begun to be linked with a move away from Saudi Arabia after reportedly beginning to become unhappy with life there.

Chelsea have been linked with a move for the Frenchman as a stop-gap option to fill the striker position for the rest of the season.

Their number one target for the position is Victor Osimhen. However, his new contract makes him near enough impossible to bring in this month.

For that reason, a short-term option has been discussed as their first potential signing of this January transfer window.

Another club who have been mentioned in the race are Arsenal, however Jones has claimed that the Blues are further ahead in wanting the deal.

He said: “I spoke to someone at Arsenal the other day to check this one and they said ‘what are his wages’? The fact they’re asking me what his wages are then it can’t have gone very far down the road, can it?

“And he’s like ‘yeah, can’t see it unless they’re going to take a massive hit’, so Arsenal clearly weren’t really looking into this transfer.

“Benzema is only willing to lower his wages for one club, and that club is not Chelsea, who are actually interested, more interested than Arsenal, and would actually look to do a deal like this if they could. The team he is willing to go and play on the cheap for would be Lyon.”

With Chelsea fans knowing first hand just how good Benzema is based on his matches at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League, many would be really excited by the prospect of seeing him play for a short period of time.
