'Very athletic': Stuart Pearce really impressed after watching £50m Chelsea star's performance this week

Chelsea star Ben Chilwell really impressed on his return to the starting line-up this week.

That is according to talkSPORT’s Stuart Pearce.

Ben Chilwell made his first start since September during Chelsea’s 6-1 triumph over Middlesbrough on Tuesday night.

The 26-year-old left-back was back in the Blues XI and captained them during a perfect game where they thrashed Boro in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

Next, Mauricio Pochettino’s side will play Fulham or Liverpool in next month’s League Cup final.

Pearce delivered a glowing match review on Chilwell’s midweek display in the cup.

He lasted 65 minutes before being substituted off and looked like he had neve been away with an all-action contribution.

When discussing Chilwell’s performance versus Middlesbrough, Pearce told talkSPORT (9:22pm, 23 January): “When you consider that length of time not starting a game, he was nice and steady. It was probably the ideal game for him. Nice and comfortable, not too much defending to do. He got forward and looked very athletic. He didn’t look off the pace in anyway shape or form. He’ll be pleased with that. You fully expect him to be nice and fresh for the cup game coming up later in the week.”

Ben Chilwell is a serious athlete

We expect Chilwell is going to get sharper and sharper with more regular minutes in the week to come, but you can already see with the naked eye what he brings to this XI.

The £50 million full-back (Sky Sports) will fly up and down the entire left channel for as long as he’s on the pitch.

There’s certainly a better balance when Chilwell’s at left-back, similarly when Reece James is at right-back.

Speaking via Sky Sports yesterday, Gary Neville described Chilwell as an injury waiting to happen. Hopefully, he can overcome his horrid luck where he’s constantly picking up injury setbacks.
