'One bright spark': ESPN pundit thinks £45m player improved Chelsea so much when he came on vs Fulham

Steve Nicol thinks Chelsea looked so much better against Fulham over the weekend after one of their substitutions.

It was a tight game, with Chelsea just about managing to run out victors after winning the game 1-0 thanks to a Cole Palmer penalty.

Mauricio Pochettino brought on Noni Madueke, Carney Chukwuemeka, Ben Chilwell and Alfie Gilchrist in the second half, and Steve Nicol praised one of those substitutions on ESPN.

It was a good afternoon for Chukwuemeka and Chilwell, who were both returning from serious injuries.

Steve Nicol thinks Ben Chilwell improved Chelsea

Nicol feels that Chelsea started to play much better after Chilwell’s introduction.

On the England international, the Liverpool legend said: “I would say the one bright spark today [Saturday] was that Chilwell came back and actually, just that short period of time he was on, things took a turn for the better.

“Now, I don’t know whether I’m looking for something or whether it actually happened, but certainly if they got him back and Reece James would help, but he doesn’t look like he’s coming back any time soon.”

Ben Chilwell should start for Chelsea

Now that Chilwell is fit again, he really should be starting for Chelsea.

Levi Colwill has been playing at left-back, but the 20-year-old is obviously a central defender by trade.

Before his injury, Pochettino was using Chilwell, who the Blues signed from Leicester City for £45m (BBC Sport), in a more attacking role.

Going forward, it is not the way to go, especially when you have a talented left winger like Mykhailo Mudryk around. But we will have to wait and see what Pochettino does.

Former Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs recently suggested that the Ukrainian has the ability to become the best creator in the Premier League. However, that is obviously not going to happen if he is being benched for a left-back. Hopefully, Pochettino does things differently during this part of the campaign.
