'Very good relationship': Djordje Petrovic shares he speaks with former Chelsea player twice a week

Blues goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic has shared that he’s got a very close relationship with one former Chelsea player.

Chelsea completed the signing of Djordje Petrovic, 24, last summer from MLS club New England Revolution.

The Serbian gloveman worked in the United States alongside New England Revolution goalkeeping coach Kevin Hitchcock, who was on Chelsea’s books as a player between 1988-2001.

Petrovic has explained that he’s maintained his friendship with former Chelsea goalkeeper Hitchcock.

“We have a very good relationship. He came to Stamford Bridge because MLS is in off-season, so he was here and watched a couple of games with the family. We have a kind of relationship like a family, you know? We chat a couple of times every week,” Petrovic said via Chelsea’s official website.

“Actually, he sent me a photo because he also saved a penalty against Newcastle in the cup for Chelsea. It was the same thing, so it was amazing.”

Djordje Petrovic impact

Petrovic had to remain patient on the bench in the opening months of the season, but Robert Sanchez’s injury opened the door for him to make his Chelsea debut in recent weeks.

We’ve now seen Petrovic play nine consecutive matches for the Blues, keeping three clean sheets.

In fairness, we think the young shot-stopper has looked pretty impressive during his first ever taste of football in this country.

The Evening Standard recently claimed that Chelsea are happy sticking with Petrovic and Sanchez as their first team goalkeepers for the foreseeable future. We’re predicting a very tough decision for head coach Mauricio Pochettino once both are fit, though.

In our view, we’ve still got a long way to go before either of them convince us that they can move into the world-class bracket of goalkeepers, something missing at Stamford Bridge since Petr Cech and Thibaut Courtois.
