'If I was captain': Troy Deeney shares how he'd deal with the Raheem Sterling situation at Chelsea

Troy Deeney has just delivered his verdict on the controversial incident involving Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling from the weekend.

Chelsea kickstarted their new Premier League season on Sunday by losing 2-0 at home to reigning champions Manchester City, but that wasn’t the storyline hogging the back pages. Instead, the absence of Raheem Sterling from the matchday squad and his reaction to it was the biggest talking point.

Sterling’s camp released a statement before kick-off, which asked for clarification from Chelsea on their client’s future after his omission from the squad against Man City.

It certainly wasn’t ideal timing for Enzo Maresca during his first competitive game as the new Blues head coach. Of course, the Italian manager is well within his right to pick the matchday squad he wants, which means high-profile names will miss out given the size of the squad.

Troy Deeney reaction to Raheem Sterling saga

Troy Deeney, who’s a former Premier League captain from time at Watford in the top division, has shared how he’d handle Sterling’s situation if he was captain at Chelsea. It seems he’s not a fan of the way the Blues attacker went about things.

When discussing Sterling’s statement on Ben Foster’s YouTube channel, Deeney said: “If I was captain, I would be going, that’s not right. We need to nip that in the bud, not on the game day, but literally today that will be getting sorted.

“It’s poor from him as well because for Raheem obviously he’s still crazy talented and very, very good player, but now you make everybody else look at you like why would I want to take that?

“Yes, you have still got three years left at Chelsea. If he moves on, he could still go to a top-four club in any country, he’s still that good. If you do want to stay, moaning about it is not going to get you it. Figure it out and work on it.”

The latest with Raheem Sterling

Sterling definitely now has some clarity on where he stands, plus the wider audience does after Maresca’s press conference on Wednesday.

Maresca explained via Football.London that Sterling is training away from Chelsea’s main group because he’s not part of his plans.

Therefore, it’s no surprise that The Athletic reports that Sterling has expressed a desire to leave Chelsea permanently.
