'Ticks all the boxes': Paul Merson claims he's surprised Chelsea haven't signed £25m player this summer
Paul Merson has shared his surprise that Chelsea haven’t signed a talented midfielder who’s reportedly on the move this summer.
Chelsea have made plenty of signings already in this summer transfer window, which has included additions in the centre of the park.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall arrived to provide more optioins in midfield, where he’s competing alongside the likes of Romeo Lavia, Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez. Bizarrely, John Obi Mikel has already written off Dewsbury-Hall, suggesting on beIN SPORTS that he can’t help the squad.

Paul Merson surprised Chelsea haven’t gone for Matt O’Riley
Paul Merson has expressed his surprise that Chelsea haven’t gone out and signed Celtic’s Matt O’Riley in this window.
The 23-year-old central midfielder has been a key player for the Scottish giants in the last two and a half years, which has earned him interest from the Premier League.
When discussing Celtic star O’Riley, Merson said on Sky Sports News (12:21pm, 24 August): “I am surprised Chelsea haven’t gone for him. He played well in America. He is a good player. He is young, he ticks all the boxes, and he is a good player.”
Chelsea linked with Matt O’Riley, but he’s set for Brighton move
According to The Sun earlier in August, Chelsea joined the race to sign Celtic midfielder O’Riley this summer.
It’s Premier League rivals Brighton that are now strongly linked with the Denmark international, though.
The Daily Mail reported on Friday night that Brighton have agreed a £25m deal with Celtic for O’Riley’s signature, with the transfer now expected to be finalised.
Brighton have started the new Premier League season with back-to-back wins over Everton and Manchester United, so they’re looking like an impressive unit once again. Now, O’Riley’s arrival is set to strengthen their squad even further.
He looks set to leave Glasgow after 27 goals and 35 assists in 124 games for Celtic. The left-footer has won six pieces of silverware with them, too.
