'8/10', 'Lives for defending': Local media raves about 20-year-old Chelsea loanee after yesterday's display
Chelsea must be delighted that Alfie Gilchrist is getting regular minutes at Sheffield United so far this season, and the Blues loanee was in action again last night.
Chelsea youngster Alfie Gilchrist, who’s aged just 20, dropped down to the Championship in the summer to join Sheffield United on a season-long loan. Interestingly, it’s the defender’s first ever spell out on loan after previously coming through the Blues academy.
It was reported by The Athletic that Cesc Fabregas’ Como wanted to sign Gilchrist on loan, but the young talent ended up moving to Sheffield to continue his development.

Local media reacts to Alfie Gilchrist performance
Sheffield United recorded an impressive 2-0 away win at Hull City on Friday night in the Championship.
For Gilchrist, he’s now started five out of five league games this campaign to mark a very positive start to his loan. The versatile defender, who’s slotted in at right-back for the Blades, received high praise from local media after his display versus Hull.
Sheffield-based newspaper The Star wrote: “Alfie Gilchrist – 8/10. This might be true or it might not be but since he arrived at Sheffield United I can’t remember anyone getting the better of Gilchrist in a one-on-one situation and the Chelsea loanee just absolutely lives for defending.
“He celebrated one block like he’d just scored the winner and picked up a booking for scything down [Abdulkadir] Omur with typical gusto. Looks a real player but felt his hamstring area after making that foul and made way soon after for [Femi] Seriki, via a much-deserved ovation from the away fans as he made his way around.”
