'Find other ways': Gus Poyet has a bit of advice for Chelsea star Cole Palmer this season
Gus Poyet has just delivered an interesting piece of advice to Chelsea talisman Cole Palmer.
If there’s one player in the Chelsea squad that came out of last season in a positive way, it was Cole Palmer. In fact, the 22-year-old’s debut season at Stamford Bridge couldn’t have gone much better.
The English attacker hit 25 goals and 15 assists in Chelsea colours during the last campaign, which is why the expectation on him has risen significantly. Incidentally, Palmer has received a huge upgrade on the EA Sports FC 25 game.
Chelsea’s attacking star has started this new season with one goal and four assists in six matches across all competitions. It’s noticeable that Blues head coach Enzo Maresca is preferring to use him in a No.10 role.

Gus Poyet advice for Cole Palmer
Gus Poyet, the former Chelsea midfielder, believes that Palmer needs to alter his game a bit this term because he’s being singled out by opposition teams.
When asked if Palmer is ready to follow in the footsteps of Gianfranco Zola and Eden Hazard, Poyet told GOAL: “Yes, but now everybody knows and they are going to mark him differently. Last year was a big impact. Now when he goes on the pitch, the opposition have already worked on him so he’s going to need to find other ways to keep improving.
“He’s young and he needs the team to play so he can become better. But, yes, definitely he’s important.”
Take inspiration from Eden Hazard
Chelsea great Eden Hazard, who’s now retired, was individually targeted more than any other player when he was in the Premier League. It didn’t stop the Belgian attacker being a major success, though.
If opponents double up on one player, it’s going to create space and gaps elsewhere on the pitch.
Palmer’s a fantastic dribbler and such an intelligent footballer, so it’s just about mastering the skill of ghosting in-between the lines to get on the ball. It’s the ultimate sign of respect when teams double up on one player, but the real elite individuals manage to deal with it.
