Frank Lampard named the 'big plus' for Chelsea in their 2-1 defeat to Liverpool

Frank Lampard has delivered his instant verdict after Chelsea’s narrow defeat away to Liverpool this weekend.

Chelsea returned to action in the Premier League on Sunday after the international break, but they were on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline against Liverpool at Anfield.

There were some positives for the Blues to take from the weekend, including the fact that both Romeo Lavia and Reece James started after their respective injury problems. Incidentally, Chelsea fans raved about Lavia’s performance against Liverpool.

However, Enzo Maresca’s side ended up taking zero points on the road to leave them sixth in the league table.

Frank Lampard reacts to Chelsea defeat at Liverpool

Chelsea legend Frank Lampard claims that the bravery of his former club was the “big plus” from their Liverpool loss.

When reacting to the Blues performance against Liverpool, Lampard said via the Premier League’s official website (7:17pm, 20 October): “Bravery is a big plus. I don’t think they create too many big chances but having the feeling of having control is a big thing for Maresca. He can speak to the players after that game and say to them ‘see you can control and the things we’re doing is good’ and they’ll buy into that. The next thing is being more dynamic in the big moments in big games.”

Chelsea need to take next step

There’s no doubt that Chelsea gave a great account of themselves at Anfield this weekend. The fact that they finished with 57 per cent possession away from home is telling of how well they competed.

Unfortunately, the Blues have fallen short now against both Manchester City and Liverpool, their two defeats of the league season so far.

It feels like everything is slowly clicking into gear for Maresca during his first few months in charge, but there’s some areas that still need to be ironed out.

First of all, certain individuals are still getting to grips when playing out from the back. In addition, the attack has fallen short when up against the elite opposition.

If this young Chelsea side wants to take the next step, they need to be a more clinical and ruthless side against the best.
