'I’ve been critical': Graeme Souness praises Enzo Maresca for one thing he's done with his Chelsea players

Graeme Souness continues to have doubts about Chelsea’s transfer business, with the Blues having another busy summer.

However, the Liverpool legend has been less critical of Enzo Maresca. In fact, he has even praised the 44-year-old following Chelsea‘s bright start to the season.

Ahead of their game against Graeme Souness‘ former club later today, Chelsea sit sixth in the Premier League table, just four points off first place. A win at Anfield could see them climb as high as second.

Maresca has spoken highly of Noni Madueke going into the match, with the winger scoring in the Blues’ last Premier League fixture, a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest.

Graeme Souness on Enzo Maresca and Chelsea players

Maresca has not been at Chelsea for long, but Souness thinks he already has his players onside and buying into his philosophy.

Speaking about the Blues in his column for the Daily Mail, the 71-year-old said: “I’ve been critical of the way Chelsea went about their business and I believe they should have been far more selective in their buying. Their scattergun approach will have stored up problems for down the road.

“But Enzo Maresca has bounced back from an uncertain start to the season and got his players onside, believing in what he’s trying to do.”

Chelsea’s tie versus Souness’ old side this afternoon could be a really tricky one. Maresca may need to start Romeo Lavia to strengthen his team’s midfield.

Can Enzo Maresca keep his whole Chelsea squad happy?

Right now, Chelsea are winning games, so it is not a surprise that the players trust Maresca and are happy with him.

However, the Blues have a big squad with a lot of talented individuals who are not playing at the minute.

The likes of Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Joao Felix are all finding starts in the Premier League hard to come by.

Simply put, as the season goes on, some Chelsea players are likely to become disgruntled with their lack of opportunities if things do not change.

But for now, though, there is obviously no reason for Maresca to start tweaking things, as his side continue to pick up points. After Liverpool, Chelsea face Panathinaikos in the Conference League, which should see the above names and others get to make starts.
