'Really poor': Jamie Carragher strongly criticises £25m Chelsea player after Liverpool defeat
Jamie Carragher wasn’t impressed by what he saw from a Chelsea player during Sunday’s defeat against Liverpool.
Chelsea were beaten 2-1 away to Liverpool this weekend during the first set of Premier League fixtures after the international break.
Frank Lampard applauded Chelsea’s bravery versus Liverpool, where they had 57% possession of the ball. However, the Blues eventually left Anfield with zero points to leave them sixth in the table.
Mohamed Salah put the hosts in front in the first-half before Nicolas Jackson’s equaliser straight after the interval.
Unfortunately, Liverpool restored their lead quickly after when Curtis Jones got in behind and guided the ball into the net.

Jamie Carragher criticises Robert Sanchez
Jamie Carragher criticised Chelsea’s defence for the winning goal from Jones. In particular, he wasn’t impressed with Blues goalkeeper Robert Sanchez for his slow work off his line.
The Sky Sports pundit has actually suggested that the £25m shot-stopper (BBC) will eventually need to be replaced at Stamford Bridge.
When discussing Liverpool’s winning goal against Chelsea, Carragher said on Sky Sports Premier League (7:25pm, 20 October): “He (Reece James) is two yards onside and he has got his hand up at the back post. It’s lazy defending. Okay, fair enough, he is a little bit tired, I also think the goalkeeper is so poor. To think the goalkeeper is trying to make a challenge two yards from his goal.
“It’s a poor touch from Curtis Jones really, he is at full stretch. Reece James hasn’t done great, and this is really poor from the goalkeeper. Chelsea need a goalkeeper if they are going to challenge next season.”
Robert Sanchez doesn’t inspire confidence
We agree that Sanchez was too hesitant off his line for Liverpool’s winning goal. Also, his overall performance was filled with uncertainty.
The most successful teams usually operate with a colossus and consistent goalkeeper in-between the sticks, but Chelsea are miles away from that right now.
For Sanchez, he’s delivered a mixture of both fantastic and poor displays in the opening months of this season. It’s hard to justify him keeping the number one spot in the long-term if this continues.
Filip Jorgensen, 22, is the understudy in net currently playing in the cup competitions. The fact that he looks a lot more trustworthy in playing out from the back makes us think he could soon push for a starting spot in the league.
