'He did very well': Enzo Maresca loved what he saw from 'versatile' Chelsea player in a new position vs Gent

Enzo Maresca has explained that one Chelsea player excelled in a new position during last night’s match in Europe.

Chelsea are pre-tournament favourites to win this season’s Conference League, so it’s no surprise that they kicked off the group stage phase on Thursday evening with a 4-2 win at home to Gent.

The Blues are beginning to build some real momentum with an attacking style of football, winning five consecutive matches across all competitions.

Renato Veiga, Pedro Neto, Christopher Nkunku and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall all scored against Gent for a Chelsea side that included 11 changes. It goes to show just how much talent is within the squad this year.

Incidentally, Chelsea fans think Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall played his best game yet as he caught the eye in the Conference League.

Enzo Maresca credits Renato Veiga

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca singled out Renato Veiga for big praise after the Gent victory.

The 21-year-old summer signing came into the side at left-back, but the manager has pointed out that he was actually much more advanced up the pitch and playing as an attacking midfielder in possession. In fairness, the Portugal international did score his first Blues goal with a superb header inside the box.

When discussing Veiga after his performance versus Gent, Maresca said via Football.London: “He is tall, he is big. Tonight he played like an attacking midfielder, in the pocket for the first time of the season for us. He did very well. You never imagine Renato arriving in the box and scoring from the other side. That means he is doing well.

“When we needed him as a holding midfielder against Bournemouth, he was there. The other day against Brighton, as a full-back. He is versatile. Tonight he was playing like an attacking midfielder but overall I think he did well.”

Chelsea posses physical strength

It’s a pretty young squad that has been put together by Chelsea, but we’re noticing that they’ve got some real powerhouses on the pitch.

For example, Veiga looks like a unit in games with his 6ft 3in frame and aggressive style. Chelsea’s starting XI last night also included specimens such as Cesare Casadei, Tosin Adarabioyo and Benoit Badiashile.

A team like Arsenal is filled with so many athletes and imposing figures, so it’s great to see Chelsea have their own physically impressive individuals.
