Romeo Lavia says whether he actually trusts his Chelsea teammates after missing so many matches

Chelsea midfielder Romeo Lavia has not had too many opportunities to play with his teammates since arriving at Stamford Bridge last summer.

Chelsea signed Romeo Lavia from Southampton for big money, but the 20-year-old only managed to make one appearance during the 2023/24 season because of injury.

He worried Chelsea fans at the start of this campaign after picking up another injury following his side’s 2-0 defeat against Manchester City. However, it was not a serious problem and Lavia is fit again, playing in their 2-1 loss away at Liverpool last Sunday.

The Belgian played well, with Jamie Carragher labelling Lavia’s performance as excellent.

Romeo Lavia on his Chelsea teammates

Because of his injury problems, Lavia has not really had the chance to develop relationships with his teammates on the pitch.

Nevertheless, the Belgium international says he still trusts them. In an exclusive interview shared by Chelsea’s official website, he said: “That whole year, it’s not been how I was expecting it to be. But I’m just happy because, without thinking about it, I’ve been at the club for a year so I know more about the culture, I know more about my team-mates, I know about everyone at the club.

“So I feel much better going onto the pitch now because I have this confidence that I have people I trust around me, people that I enjoy being with, and that all just makes it easier.”

Darren Bent is a fan of the Lavia-Caicedo partnership Chelsea supporters got to see at Anfield last weekend.

Romeo Lavia deserves to start against Newcastle United

While Lavia could not prevent Chelsea from losing against Liverpool, again, the former Southampton man had a good game.

According to Sofascore, Lavia made two interceptions and two tackles. Malo Gusto was the only Chelsea player to register more.

Ultimately, Lavia deserves to retain his spot in the team and having not featured against Panathinaikos midweek, he should be feeling fresh.

With Chelsea playing at home and Newcastle being a defensively solid side, though, Enzo Maresca may not want a double pivot of Lavia and Moises Caicedo. He may want to get Enzo Fernandez’s creativity in there.

The Chelsea manager has so many good options in his squad. It certainly will be interesting to see what he goes with this afternoon. Whatever happens, Chelsea fans will just be glad that Lavia is available again after his extremely long absence last term.
