'Very good': Kalvin Phillips says £150k-a-week Chelsea player is now playing so well

Kalvin Phillips has paid huge credit to Chelsea’s midfielder after playing against him in the past.

When you look at the Chelsea squad, they’ve got a number of talented players to choose from, especially in the midfield area.

Enzo Maresca, the Blues manager, is rotating his squad well so far to keep lots of individuals involved. We expect that pattern to continue after the international break with a busy schedule that includes Premier League, Carabao Cup and Conference League matches.

Kalvin Phillips hails Moises Caicedo

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who’s currently on a season-long loan at Ipswich Town, has been discussing the ability of Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo.

He thinks that the 22-year-old Blues star is an impressive defensive midfielder and someone playing well after receiving plenty of stick for his price tag. It’s worth remembering that Chelsea splashed £115m (BBC) to sign Caicedo from Brighton back in the summer window of 2023.

“Caicedo, I have played against him a couple of times. He’s a very good player,” Phillips told Sky Sports Premier League.

“Obviously, you talk about price tags and stuff that kind of kill players, and I think that’s definitely what’s happened with him. Not for players, but I think, you know, outside of football a lot of people talk about the price tag and, you know, he’s not performing, and I think, you know, if you just give people time, they are going to start performing, and you know, he’s doing that now.”

Chelsea midfielder is shining

Caicedo, who tops the list of Chelsea’s most expensive signings ever, is consistently performing in the Blues midfield.

We agree that the weight of his transfer fee may have impacted his displays when he first came to Stamford Bridge, but he’s been on an upwards trajectory in 2024. Now, we’d rate the £150,000-a-week man (Spotrac) as one of the very best players in Maresca’s side.

Speaking via ESPN this week, Caicedo shared he’s delighted with his Chelsea form this season.

The aggressive midfielder gives so much to his club side both in and out of possession, so it now feels like he’s one of the first names on the team sheet.

His on-field relationship alongside Enzo Fernandez in Chelsea’s midfield is getting stronger. However, Romeo Lavia will push them both close for a starting position if he can keep himself fit.
