‘Top option’: Chelsea staff believe ‘special’ Premier League striker is exactly what they need – journalist

Talk of Chelsea looking to sign a new striker has not gone away despite the strong start to the season for their current pair.

The Blues decided not to sign a big-name central forward over the summer, instead putting the faith in Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku.

There certainly were efforts made to bring a top star in, with the Blues negotiating over Victor Osimhen all the way up to the deadline of the last window.

Their faith in what they already had at the club has paid off so far. Nkunku is the club’s top scorer in all competitions, however cannot ease Jackson out of the starting XI due to his strong performances.

Jackson’s partnership with Cole Palmer has been key to a lot of Chelsea’s success so far this season in front of goal, although a new striker is still very much being discussed.

Chelsea think Liam Delap would be perfect signing

One of the names Chelsea have reportedly been monitoring is Liam Delap, who has made a great start to the Premier League season at Ipswich Town.

A number of top teams seem to be taking note of the former Manchester City man this season. Tottenham are reportedly interested in Delap as a central option.

Simon Phillips has stated that Chelsea have been watching every single minute of the Englishman this season, and believe he could be the perfect option to have alongside Jackson.

He said on his Substack: “Liam Delap is the other top option, with Chelsea scouting every minute he plays this season and compiling their reports. Many in the club believe Chelsea need this kind of striker profile, someone who is different to Jackson.

“And the data and eye test shows that Delap has a very high chance of becoming a clinical and physical striker.”

Delap has already impressed a number of top names in the game, with Pep Guardiola previously describing him as ‘special’.

Christopher Nkunku’s future at Chelsea not clear

If Chelsea could add anything to their current options in front of goal, it would probably be their ability to find the net with just one chance when it really matters.

The future for Nkunku currently looks unclear, with him reportedly unhappy with his amount of minutes this season under Enzo Maresca.

Manchester United are reportedly interested in Nkunku, with them looking to get their team firing under new manager Ruben Amorim.
