'It doesn't surprise me': Jason Cundy shares whether he wants Chelsea to sign Alejandro Garnacho

Chelsea are linked with several different attackers in the transfer rumour mill, including Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho.

Even though there’s been so much speculation in the last few weeks, there’s been very few January transfers actually involving Chelsea. Will we see a late burst form the Blues before the window shuts on 3 February?

Man Utd winger Alejandro Garnacho, 20, has been rumoured as a target for Enzo Maresca’s side.

Chelsea made an enquiry about Man Utd £60m-rated youngster Garnacho last week as they eye more attacking reinforcements at Stamford Bridge. In addition, Garnacho would prefer to stay in the Premier League despite widespread speculation about interest from Italian club Napoli.

Jason Cundy shares if he wants Chelsea to sign Alejandro Garnacho

Jason Cundy admits that he wouldn’t be against Chelsea recruiting Man Utd’s Garnacho because he does rate him as a player.

Cundy told talkSPORT: “It doesn’t surprise me that Chelsea are interested in Garnacho. If you go back to the reign of Erik ten Hag, there weren’t that many success stories; he was one of them. I like what I see. I think there’s still a little bit of [rawness]… It’s about what’s the ceiling with him? I don’t quite know that ceiling…

“There is industry. I’ve seen enough. I wouldn’t say no… It fits the model. If you talk about the model that we’re buying players, he ticks those boxes. The way that the ownership is run, he does suit that.”

In terms of Garnacho, his profile as an exciting youngster with big potential definitely fits the transfer policy under the current Chelsea owners.

The Argentine winger is guilty of blowing hot and cold at times with his form. However, he’s still scored eight goals and created five assists in 32 appearances across all competitions so far this season.

Chelsea youngster Tyrique George must be frustrated by the Garnacho rumours because his game time will surely be at risk if another first-team winger joins before the close of the January window.

Alejandro Garnacho vs Jadon Sancho this season

If Garnacho joins Chelsea, we’d expect him to mainly fight it out with 24-year-old Jadon Sancho for the left wing spot. Therefore, it’s interesting to see how the duo compare in the Premier League so far this season.

Player Appearances (Starts) Goals Assists Successful dribbles Chances created Shots Average rating
Alejandro Garnacho 21 (11) 3 1 13 18 48 6.61
Jadon Sancho 16 (11) 2 4 34 21 14 7.21

Sancho, who’s actually on loan at Chelsea from Man Utd, is performing well in West London. The jury is out on if Garnacho could replicate his success, though.

At £60m, Garnacho feels like he’d be far too big a risk despite his obvious potential.
