'Opportunity was there': Erling Haaland says he was surprised at Robert Sanchez in Chelsea's loss to Man City
Chelsea only have themselves to blame as they left the Etihad Stadium following a 3-1 defeat to Manchester City this evening.
The Blues couldn’t of asked for a better start after Noni Madueke opened the scoring just three minutes into the game, pouncing on an error from Abdukodir Khusanov as he endured a rough start to life in England.
Enzo Maresca had the chance to capitalise on Khusanov’s clear lack of confidence, however the Blues didn’t play with the belief that they could take the game to City.

Erling Haaland surprised at Robert Sanchez’s positioning for his goal against Chelsea
The champions levelled the game before half-time, and it was Erling Haaland as always who put them ahead, scoring from what looked at first like a difficult angle.
However, that opportunity was made a whole lot easier by the positioning of Robert Sanchez. The Spaniard changed his mind about coming for the long ball, and instead found himself in no man’s land.
Haaland’s chance turned out to be a relatively simple one, and even the Norwegian couldn’t believe the opportunity he was handed by Sanchez.
He said to Sky Sports: “I think Chelsea went really quick to play man against man, so there was a lot of space because obviously the line is really high.
“As you’ve seen before Ederson has been giving me a couple of assists, and I know how precise he can be, so it’s about having the right timing between him and me, because everyone has a man and it’s difficult to play.
“So sometimes, even Manchester City can go quite direct. I think it was a really good goal and an amazing pass by Ederson.
“It’s difficult because you have to take the decision right there, I thought there was space in behind so I tried to just let it go as he didn’t quite go for the ball [Chalobah], and then it was about running. Sanchez was mistiming it, and the opportunity was there to just shoot it.
“Yeah, [surprised at Sanchez’s positioning] I thought he was going to get it at first, but then I quickly saw that he stopped and then it was about staying calm and putting it into the back of the net.”
Robert Sanchez costing Chelsea points regularly
No goalkeeper has made more errors leading to a goal than Sanchez this season, and Chelsea fans are beginning to get fed up of these moments.
Supporters were outraged at Sanchez after the win against Wolves, and the decision to not start Filip Jorgensen is continuing to not get a look in.
Maresca has been defiant in his backing of Sanchez, however that choice is costing Chelsea frequently, and they can’t afford for that to continue to happen in their race for the top four.
