Enzo Maresca is now 'seriously considering' dropping one Chelsea star for West Ham clash - journalist

Enzo Maresca could drop at least one of his players for Chelsea’s game against West Ham United in the Premier League on Monday.

Chelsea lost 3-1 to Manchester City last time out, with Enzo Maresca‘s side really struggling on the day.

The Blues’ backline was particularly poor. Levi Colwill and Trevoh Chalobah were bullied all game by Erling Haaland, while Robert Sanchez made another costly mistake.

Chelsea could now try to replace Sanchez with Gregor Kobel of Borussia Dortmund.

Enzo Maresca considering dropping Robert Sanchez

Sanchez has made quite a few errors this season, but his latest one may not go unpunished.

Journalist Simon Phillips has claimed on his Substack Si Phillips Talks Chelsea that Maresca is “seriously considering” dropping Sanchez for Monday’s London derby against West Ham.

In general, Maresca has been quick to defend Sanchez in the current campaign. But after the City game, the Chelsea manager criticised his goalkeeper for the first time.

“Robert is completely aware he has to do better, we trust him but we’ll decide for the next game,” Maresca told reporters at the Etihad.

Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy thinks it is time for Sanchez to be axed from the starting XI.

Should Enzo Maresca drop Robert Sanchez?

Some of Sanchez’s numbers this season are actually really good. For example, the 27-year-old has a save percentage of 76.3%. Only two goalkeepers in the Premier League have recorded higher percentages than him.

Rank Goalkeeper Save percentage
1. Kepa Arrizabalaga 77.1%
2. Martin Dubravka 76.5%
3. Robert Sanchez 76.3%
4. David Raya 75.3%
5. Lukasz Fabianski 74.6%

Simply put, though, Sanchez is just making way too many errors and it is costing Chelsea goals.

His last mistake was the fifth that he has made which has led to the opposition scoring this season. No goalkeeper has made more.

With Sanchez showing no signs of improvement in that area, it is unquestionably time for him to be dropped and for Filip Jorgensen to be given a chance.

Chelsea believe Jorgensen has “elite potential”. Now is the time for Maresca to give the former Villarreal man an opportunity to show that. On Monday, it looks like there is a real possibility of that happening.
