He joined Chelsea as a wonderkid and now £13m flop signing has two assists for Cristiano Ronaldo in the Saudi Pro League

A former Chelsea player has kicked on and is now enjoying playing alongside Cristiano Ronaldo every week in Saudi Arabia.

When you look at the success rate of transfers under the current Chelsea owners, it’s been quite a mixed bag. It’s hardly a surprise when you factor in the sheer volume of incomings and outgoings at Stamford Bridge in the last couple of years.

There are plenty of examples of players thriving after moving away from West London. For instance, the likes of Lewis Hall (Newcastle United), Christian Pulisic (AC Milan) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (Nottingham Forest) are excelling elsewhere.

Chelsea chiefs made mistakes in the recent January transfer window, including loaning out Joao Felix to AC Milan for the rest of the season.

Former Chelsea player now has two assists for Cristiano Ronaldo in the Saudi Pro League

Back in the summer of 2023, Chelsea signed Angelo Gabriel as an 18-year-old wonderkid from Santos in a deal worth £13m (Daily Mail).

However, a year later the Blues sold Angelo to Saudi Pro League outfit Al Nassr for £19m (BBC).

The fact that the Brazilian youngster never made a competitive appearance in Chelsea colours means he’s got to go down as a flop. Following a loan spell with sister club Strasbourg in France, he was immediately sold.

Now aged 20, the right-winger appears to be thriving in Saudi Arabia, where he’s teammates with Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr. In fact, he’s even assisted the legendary footballer twice so far this season.

25 November 2024 Al Gharafa 1-3 Al Nassr Cristiano Ronaldo Angelo Gabriel

Some Chelsea fans thought Angelo could make a first-team breakthrough at Stamford Bridge, but that was before he was let go on a permanent basis last summer.

Now, the South American youngster is playing regularly for Al Nassr, where he’s learning in attack from one of the greatest players of all time. In 22 games across all competitions this season, Angelo’s scored twice and created six assists.

Chelsea must not fluff their lines with Estevao Willian

Estevao Willian, who’s still only aged 17, officially completes his move from Palmeiras to Chelsea later in 2025. Hopefully, the Blues can allow this Brazilian rising star to shine with them rather than selling him after only a year.

Estevao is a teenager with a bigger reputation than Angelo when he signed for Chelsea, but will things turn out differently for him?

Chelsea are convinced they’ve hit the jackpot with Estevao because he’s a skilful right-winger with immense potential and a lot of hype around him. Hopefully, the door is left ajar for him to get a chance with the Blues first-team squad next season.

Many fans are getting quite fed up with the arrival of so many youngsters that realistically don’t all have a chance of making it with them.
