The three players Enzo Maresca must leave out of Chelsea's Conference League squad including Wesley Fofana

Chelsea are required this week to submit their final squad to take part in the knockout stages of the Conference League this season.

The competition, which presents the Blues’ best chance at winning a trophy this season, saw Enzo Maresca make a plethora of changes from the sides who featured in the Premier League.

The Blues made the decision before the campaign began to leave Cole Palmer out of the squad for the group stages, a decision which proved a wise one as they went on to win all six games without him.

However, there will certainly be an appetite to bring him into the squad for the big games in the second half of the competition, and this shot at glory could come at the expense of one of his teammates.

As per UEFA’s rules, only three changes are allowed to be made to the squad who started the competition, including any new signings made during the January transfer window.

Enzo Maresca should leave Wesley Fofana, Aaron Anselmino and Mathis Amougou out of Conference League squad

The Blues will be without some key group stage players due to them leaving the club on loan. Joao Felix, Axel Disasi, Renato Veiga and Carney Chukwuemeka are all gone for the rest of the season, while Cesare Casadei left on deadline day in a permanent deal.

Maresca will therefore have to decide over which three of Wesley Fofana, Romeo Lavia, Trevoh Chalobah, Mathis Amougou and Aaron Anselmino will not be present.

It seems an easy decision to not select the two youngsters. Both players look as if they are most likely to be loaned out before properly kicking off their Chelsea careers.

Chalobah will be named in the squad after returning from the loan. Maresca has already shown backing to the Englishman after naming him in his starting XI for his first two games back.

It will be a tough call, but the Blues should decide not to name Wesley Fofana in their squad, while giving Romeo Lavia the chance to feature if the Blues make the latter stages of the tournament.

Chelsea’s limited Conference League midfielders

Both players have suffered from a plethora of injuries since joining the club, however the midfielder would certainly fill a void in the current squad which may be more required for the Blues.

Other than Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, the only senior central-midfielder left is Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and relying on youngsters is something the manager is unlikely to do as the games get more important.

Chelsea decided not to recall either of Andrey Santos and Lesley Ugochukwu from their respective loans, and with neither of them in the Chelsea squad the presence of Lavia will be crucial should anything happen to the South American pair.
