Borussia Dortmund make Carney Chukwuemeka transfer decision as Chelsea loanee misses key Champions League game

Out of all the players who left Chelsea during the January transfer window, there is not a more unfortunate case than the one of Carney Chukwuemeka.

The youngster departed after making just one start all season under Enzo Maresca since he took over, with that being in the freezing conditions against Astana.

The manager admitted that Chelsea tried to sell Chukwuemeka in the summer, although hinted he could be handed opportunities after staying.

This wasn’t the case, and after failed attempts to loan Chukwuemeka to Strasbourg, Borussia Dortmund swooped in and signed him for the rest of the season.

Borussia Dortmund want to sign Carney Chukwuemeka permanently from Chelsea

It has already been reported that Dortmund must qualify for Europe in order to put themselves in a position to sign the midfielder permanently.

However, they have not seen a great deal from the former Aston Villa man since he made the move. He has just 40 minutes under his belt in three appearances for the Bundesliga side.

Carney Chukwuemeka Borussia Dortmund stats Total minutes

vs St Pauli (01/04) 16
vs Union Berlin (22/02) 20

Chukwuemeka was not present in the squad for Dortmund’s Champions League Round of 16 first leg tie against Lille, with him still nursing a knee injury that has plagued his start to life there.

The Bundesliga side were unable to hold on to an early lead, eventually drawing the home leg 1-1.

Despite this, the midfielder has already made a good impression on his new manager, Niko Kovac, and according to Sky Germany, they will make a move to sign him permanently at the end of the season.

Chelsea’s stance on Chukwuemeka

Despite accepting that he would have to go on loan in January, there were actually attempts before that to sell Chukwuemeka permanently during the winter transfer window.

However, it was believed clubs were put off by Chelsea’s insistence his release clause was paid, a fee believed to be in the region of £40m.

Given that Maresca was clearly not a fan of his, it remains likely that the Blues look to sell him permanently at the end of the season.

Whether it is to Dortmund or elsewhere, they will be hoping he can feature more in the coming months in order to get his value up to interested parties.
