‘Underrated’ manager once flew into London to hold talks with Chelsea, he’s so much better than Enzo Maresca

Enzo Maresca is starting to become an unpopular figure among the Chelsea fanbase and not just because of his team’s latest results.

Supporters are not happy with the brand of football Chelsea are playing under Maresca right now.

In recent games, Chelsea fans have been urging the team to attack, discontent with the slow and laboured build-up play currently on display.

In stark contrast, Paris Saint-Germain have been one of the most exciting sides in Europe to watch, and the Blues could have actually had their manager Luis Enrique in the dugout once upon a time.

Luis Enrique flew into London to hold talks over Chelsea job

Following the sacking of Graham Potter in 2023, Enrique was the frontrunner for the Chelsea job at one stage.

In fact, according to Sky Sports, the 54-year-old even flew to London to hold talks with the club about succeeding Potter.

In the end, Chelsea went for Mauricio Pochettino, but with the Argentine no longer at Stamford Bridge and Enrique flourishing at PSG, you cannot help but feel that the Blues made a mistake not hiring the latter.

Amid Maresca’s struggles, Chelsea fans have been discussing Enrique, impressed with the job that he has done in France.

The former Spain manager has just taken PSG to the semi-finals of the Champions League, where they will face Chelsea’s London rivals Arsenal.

In contrast, Maresca and his side have just about squeezed into the semi-finals of the Conference League. Chelsea lost 2-1 to Legia Warsaw in the second leg of their quarter-final tie on Thursday, which has resulted in a lot of criticism.

Luis Enrique a superior coach to Enzo Maresca

Understandably, with way more experience at the top level, Enrique is a better manager than Maresca and that has been clear to see over the last couple of weeks.

Again, while Enrique has got PSG to excel in the Champions League, a competition they have really underperformed in in the past, Maresca is having trouble with Legia and some of the bottom teams in the Premier League.

As well as losing to Legia, Chelsea also dropped points at home to Championship-bound Ipswich Town, drawing 2-2 with them last weekend.

The kind of hype that Maresca was getting at the start of the season, Enrique probably deserves it now.

“I think Luis Enrique is one of the most underrated managers,” Chelsea legend Joe Cole said on TNT Sports earlier this week.

Not hiring him will go down as another mistake that Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali have made as owners of Chelsea.
